an informal poll - and a GIVEAWAY!!!

Forgive me for the photograph of a page from my wedding album, but I got hitched 8 years ago - back in the stone age of film photography. I love this photo from our wedding - we are actually leaving the reception (and I am finally going to eat something!) It looks sort of old Hollywood glamour to me. My wedding photographer, Jon Nickson, did an amazing job capturing the moments that happened throughout our wedding day. By far my favorite photos from the wedding are those pictures that were taken without my knowledge. Where I am laughing, talking, and just enjoying myself. Jon told me I would love those photos far more than any posed photos I insisted on, and he was right. I do wish that I had taken some "posed" photos with certain family members, though. Something purely for posterity.

So, my dear readers, as I am preparing to photograph my friend's wedding in July, I'm starting to compile a list of photographs that should be taken during the day. The list will include the specific (bride with groom is a good place to start, yes?) and the more abstract (bride's bouquet, bride's shoes, etc.) But I want to hear from YOU - describe to me in the comments section your favorite wedding photo. It can be your wedding, or pictures from a wedding that you've looked at. I just want to know what was happening in the photo. If you want to email me the photo so I can post it, even better!

I also want to know if there are any photos you wish you had - for example, I wish I had a photo of just me and my grandmother. She passed away almost 5 years ago now, and I would love to have a photo of just the 2 of us at my wedding. I want to make sure my wedding photo list is as comprehensive as possible.

So to get some good comments, I decided to sweeten the pot. One of you will be randomly chosen to win a $10 gift card to Starbucks! All that just for leaving a comment on my blog - that's not too much to ask, is it? Post a comment by Friday, and I'll pick the winner out of a hat next Monday.

Good luck - and thanks!

My favorite picture is just a picture of our hands... we're at the reception afterwards and our hands were next to each other a few of my fingers just barely over his (I was probably just stroking his fingers as I tend to do when we're holding hands). It was a captured habit and it's my favorite.

I would have liked to get a couple of pics in the "dressing room" where my bridesmaids and I were just hanging out and they were helping me with my veil and makeup. Pictures of us all in a row getting our hair done at the salon in the morning. I didn't and wish I did. Similar pictures in the guys room would have been nice. I have tons of formal pics, but I'd have liked more of just the general moments of the day. I wish I had a pic of my mom and her sister in the kitchen making the kransakaka, Icelandic wedding cake.

I have several pictures that are favorites. At the time I knew very little about photography, but I KNEW that I wanted something different. Not so posed and perfect. Something from a different perspective. The best pictures, in my opinion, are classy, but candid. Not too obscure, but capturing a moment that otherwise, would be lost forever.
I loved all my photos. My faovrites are of other people. Seeing how much they really did enjoy the day. People were smiling the entire time and it made me happy that they had as much fun as I did. I love going through my photos and pointing out people and seeing their expressions. Many of these people have passed on and what a great reminder of them. I do wish that I had a picture of the tables at the reception because we worked REALLY hard on those. I also wish we had a picture with my uncle, who married us and one of us sitting on the benches at LAGBC....where Sean and I met over 20 years ago. I will send you the pics that are my favorite (sorry there are more than one. I couldn't pic).
You will do GREAT at Megs wedding...I just know it! I will help you however you need. Especially if you need someone loud to rally people together for photos. I dont have bridesmaid duties, so I'm at your beckon call! :)

love that photo of you two.

we had all artsy photos and very few traditional ones at our wedding. while they are beautiful images, i do wish we had just a few more traditional ones of the family. i found myself disappointed not having those, even though i don't consider myself a traditionalist.

my favorite shot from our wedding is from after the ceremony. we got married in bolinas, at an old house owned by our friends adjacent to a huge field overlooking the water. after the ceremony, we had a mariachi band escort everyone from the house to the open field for a group picture. just before everyone gathered for the official group shot, our photographer got some lovely, whimsical shots of gabe and i together, with little hints of the mariachi trio in the background. the reason i love the photo is because it so captures the essence of the day without being too cheesy.

hope that's helpful!

Ooh, I can't pick just one!

The cover of my album - and the shot of taken for several friends whose photographers didn't think of it - is a shot of our rings nestled in the bouquet. I take it a few ways - 1 super sharp of the whole thing, 1 at my lowest f-stop, and 1 where the whole thing is just slightly out of focus so the whole thing is softer.

Another shot I love from my wedding is of Ralph's hand on my lower back while we are dancing. The back of my dress was the focal point, so it captures the prettiness of the dress and the gentleness of his hold.

One more that I love, though the photo of it isn't great, is the first photo of us exiting the church. We've both got 'oh my gosh, what did we just do?!?!?' expressions on our faces.

Shots I wish I had:
- Ceremony observers' expressions - especially my parents.
- My prep materials - wedding binder, etc. This one may be very specific to me - the excel sheets I made for everyone involved have become the stuff of legend :)

My favorite photo of the big day was with my grandpa. We had a relaxed ceremony and we were able to get my grandpa into a long-sleeved hawaiian shirt and he had a lei on as well. So classic!

We also had the photographer take lots of the guests. Since Andrew and I were "coming out" about how we met (online), we wanted to get the guests reactions.

Another favorite is when Andrew and I kissed and our "bridesmaid/groomsmen" (nieces and nephews) were making yuck faces.

my faves:
-seeing each other for the first time (our photog was in the hotel room with me and took a bunch of my husband's face when he first saw me.)
-decorative details. on the pews, the tables, etc.
-wedding party pics during the meals...i love seeing them having a good time, talking to each other, laughing, etc.

Thanks everyone for your comments - I love hearing about the details from your special days (Icelandic wedding cake! Mariachi band!).

I'm getting lots of great ideas, and if you know of anyone else that should leave a comment send this post along to them - the more the merrier...

since i am actually thinking of this myself this is perfect!
I think the most beautiful pics are the candid ones that get the guests reactions. I love seeing how the groom looks when his bride walks down the aisle and I want one of my maids and my shoes.
I also want to get one of my fiance dancing with our daughter and a few of her jamming on her own.
the dressing room of both the bride and groom. it seems there are always pics of the bride but never what the guys are doing. I am always wishing to be a fly on the wall so that would be super.
also i think semi-candid shots of the bride w/ her best girlfriends is priceless!
